Listvyanka

For those of us in the northern hemisphere these photos will get us in a wintry mood, if we are not already snowed in.

Listvyanka on the shores of Lake Baikal is one of the coldest places on earth in winter.

Located 60km south east of Irkutsk, Listvyanka is the most popular spot for viewing Lake Baikal.

To reach Listvyanka from Irkutsk take a taxi (1 hour), bus (90 minutes) or boat (1 hour) down the Angara River.

Activities in Listvyanka include hiking, mountain-biking and horse riding in summer; snow sauna and dog-sledging in winter. Numerous hotels cater for tourists.

Kafkanistan Exhibition

Kafkanistan – tourism to Afghanistan…

Kafkanistan – is a world created by Austrian multi-media artist Lukas Birk and Irish ethnographer Sean Foley. It explores present day tourism to conflict zones in Afghanistan and neighboring countries. The name Kafkanistan was inspired by Kafka’s The Castle, a book whose protagonist journeys through a world unknown to him, full of rumors and misleading stories. He’s never sure whom to trust or what to believe in.

Photos, Videos, Installations, Performance and many many stories are waiting for you in Kafkanistan.
For those of you with children – I am sure they will have fun too. If you don’t mind them asking
why tourists would collect wolf shit in Afghanistan or visit gun factories…

Xiamen – Amoy’s The Merrier

Xiamen, officially China’s cleanest city and facing Taiwan across the South China Sea, has much to recommend it.

Xiamen

Known to westerners, in days gone by, as Amoy, the place has long been a triving port, visited by Portuguese and later Dutch traders before the British took up residence in the 1840s. Xiamen is situated on a large island joined to the mainland by a 5km long causeway.

Xiamen

Most of the island’s main historical attractions are situated on the small, pedestrianized islet of Gulangyu or are just around the main waterfront on the main island.

Gulangyu was a foreign concession until the end of World War II and retains a relaxing, peaceful charm – with no cars.
