Olympics: Team Nigeria competed without insurance

The national athletes competed at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games without any insurance policy in accordance with the global practice in sports, it has been revealed.
Our correspondent, who covered the games, learnt that the National Sports Commission failed to insure the athletes against accidents and other emergency situations that might arise at the games.
It was learnt that a budget of N5.5 million was presented to the NSC for endorsement before the games but the paper was not signed.
The special sports athletes traveling to Beijing for the Paralympics scheduled to take place between September 6 and 17 will also suffer the same fate, our correspondent also learnt.
“The practice all over the world is to insure every athlete and official before competitions so that they will be motivated to give the country their best at such events.
“We have to thank God that we did not have any serious case of injury at the games,” our source revealed.
The athletes that represented the country at the Algiers 2007 All Africa Games were fully insured by the Team Nigeria Trust Fund led by Suleiman Ali.
Our correspondent also learnt that some of the athletes, who represented the country at the Beijing Games were aware of the development and this might have affected their performances.
Nigeria finished with one silver and three bronze medals to place 61 out of the 89 countries that made it to the medals table in Beijing.
A total of 205 countries took part in the games.

South Korea wins gold in men’s 80kg plus taekwondo

South Korea continue their domination in the taekwondo with Dongmin Cha winning the gold in men’s 80kg plus division.

Alexandros Nikolaidis from Greece won the silver medal and bronze medals went to Chika Yagazie Chukwumerije from Nigeria and Arman Chilmanov from Kazakhstan.

Argentina defeats Nigeria 1-0 to win Olympic gold in men’s football

Angel di Maria of Argentina scored the only goal against Nigeria, earning them the gold medal at the Beijing Olympics. Argentina also won the gold medal at the 2004 Athens games.

Brazil beat Belgium yesterday to win the bronze medal.

Russia win women’s 4×100 meter relay

Russia have won the gold medal in the women’s 4×100 meter relay at the Beijing Olympics with a time of 42.31 seconds.

Belgium won the silver and Nigeria won the bronze after the Jamaican team fumbled the baton.

Maurren Higa Maggi of Brazil wins women’s long jump

Maurren Higa Maggi of Brazil has won the gold medal in the women’s long jump with a distance of 7.04 meters.

Tatyana Lebedeva of Russia won the silver medal and Blessing Okagbare from Nigeria won the bronze medal.

Pele disappointed with Brazil’s loss to Argentina

Pele who is in Beijing helping with Rio de Janeiro’s bid to host the 2016 Olympics, said Argentina were better prepared than Brazil in the men’s football.

“I think Argentina were better prepared than Brazil,” said Pele. “Once again, Brazil couldn’t win the gold medal.”

“It’s not good for us but this is what happens in football, one team loses and one team wins. Against Argentina, it’s always very difficult with a great rivalry.”

“Brazil has to work hard to form a team because nothing will happen with just big names, with 11 big names. A team has to be prepared. If the players don’t know that it will be difficult to form a team.”

Brazil will battle Belgium for the bronze medal, while Argentina play Nigeria to decide the gold.

Lionel Messi scored and two goals came from Sergio Aguero.

A crowd of 52,968 fans packed the Worker’s Stadium including Diego Maradona.

Nigeria thrashed Belgium 4-1 in Shanghai.

Nigeria defeats Japan in mens soccer

Nigeria is one step closer to the quarter finals after defeating Japan 2-1, in Tianjin.

Victor Obinna scored one goal for Nigeria and Victor Anichebe scored the second. Yohei Toyoda scored Japan’s goal in the 79th minute.

“Of course there were mistakes, but overall I’m happy with my team,” Nigeria coach Samson Siasia said. “We just want to enjoy the moment.”
