British Shooting’s £400K Legacy

The Telegraph reports that British Shooting has been advised by the government that if it wants a post 2012 legacy at Woolwich, it will have to pay £400K for the privilege.

I wonder if that figure will be added to the Olympics budget, even if British Shooting pay it, given that the concept of "legacy" is what we are being told the money is being spent on?

Months of Olympic Chaos

It seems that mere mortals in Woolwich, not lucky enough to be granted special travel lanes/travel arrangements for the Olympics, will be suffering some considerable travel inconvenience during (and indeed in the 9 months preceding) the London Olympics.

The Olympics Delivery Authority (ODA) will be closing roads around the 2012 shooting venue, up to nine months before the event. Ha Ha Road, Repository Road and Circular Way will be closed before and during the Games.

The ODA planning application also shows that sports fields will be closed, and an unspecified number of trees felled.

I am sure that the residents of Woolwich will bear their inconvenience with fortitude!

After all the Olympics is such a "worthy, well supported and popular cause", isn't it?

Woolwich Barracks Obscured

The London Olympics bid showed an artist's impression of a female competitor aiming her shotgun in full view of the grade II-listed frontage of the Royal Artillery barracks Woolwich.

The reality will be somewhat less impressive.

Owing to health and safety issues the backdrop for the Olympic clay pigeon shooting competition will be a 62ft (19m) high "ballistic screen", this will stretch across the shotgun range to prevent lead from pellets hitting nearby homes.

Appalling Waste

Lord Lucas, during question time on Tuesday, said:

"Is it not a strange definition of cost-effective and a most appalling waste to spend £40m on a shooting venue at Woolwich, which will be destroyed immediately after the Olympics, rather than £10m less for a facility at Bisley that will be used for generations?"

I agree.

However, what is £40M in an ever expanding budget that currently stands at £12BN (including £2BN running costs)?

Alaskan couple snags silver and gold medals in Beijing

Alaskans Matt and Katerina Emmons just got something else to talk about over dinner: their gold and silver medals in the Olympic shooting event.
The deadeye husband-wife tandem of shooters Matt and Katerina Emmons continued wearing out the path to the medals podium at the Beijing Summer Games.
Matt is a former University of Alaska Fairbanks shooter who lists both Fairbanks and Browns Mill, N.J., as his hometown. Katerina, his wife, shoots for the Czech Republic.
On Friday in Beijing, Matt won a silver medal in the 50-meter prone event, just behind Artur Ayvazian of the Ukraine. Four years ago in Athens, Greece, Emmons won gold in the same event.
He joins alpine skier Tommy Moe as the only Alaskans who have more than one Olympic medal. Moe captured a gold and silver as well, in the downhill and super-G races in the 1994 Winter Games.
After the competiton, Emmons walked over to the stands, where his wife rushed to embrace him.

Vincent Hancock from the United States has won the gold medal in the men’s skeet at the Beijing Olympic Games with a total of 145 hits. Hancock had to battle off Tore Brovola of Norway in a shoot-off for the gold. Anthony Terras of France took the bronze medal, also after a shoot-off.

Oleksandr Petriv from Ukraine win’s gold medal in men’s 25m rapid fire pistol

Oleksandr Petriv of Ukraine has won the gold medal in the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol with a score of 780.2 to set a new Olympic record.

Ralf Schumann (779.5) and Christian Reitz (779.3) won the silver and bronze medals for Germany.

Artur Ayvazian wins gold in the 50m rifle prone

Artur Ayvazian from Ukraine has won the gold medal in the men’s 50 meter rifle prone at the Beijing Olympics, with a total score of 702.7 points.

The United States‘ Matthew Emmons won the silver medal with a total of 701.7 and Australia’s Warren Potent won the bronze medal with a total of 700.5.

Chiara Cainero wins gold medal in women’s skeet – shooting

Chiara Cainero from Italy won the gold medal in the afternoon rain, in the women’s skeet at the Beijing Olympics.

Kimberly Rhode of the United States and Christine Brinker of Germany won the bronze medal.

Du Li of China wins the gold medal in women’s 50m rifle three positions

Du Li from China has won the gold medal in the women’s 50m rifle three positions setting a new Olympic record of 690.3 points.

Katerina Emmons of the Czech Republic won the silver medal with 687.7 points, and Eglis Yaima Cruz of Cuba with 687.6 points won the bronze medal.
