Russia wins gold in synchronized swimming team event

Russia has won the gold medal in the synchronized swimming team event with a perfect score of 100.00 in the team free routine.

Spain won the silver medal and China won the bronze.

Russia claims Synchronized Swimming Team gold

– Russia won the Synchronized Swimming Team Event gold medal after they finished a perfect 100.000 performance in the Team Free Routine on August 23, scoring a cumulative total of 99.500 points. Spain won the silver medal with a total score of 98.251. Host China earned the bronze medal with 97.334 points. Placing fourth was Canada at 95.668.

Russia wins gold in synchronized swimming duet free

Russian’s Anastasia Davydova and Anastasia Ermakova won the gold medal in the synchronized swimming duet free gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Spain’s Andrea Fuentes and Gemma Mengual won the silver and Japan’s Saho Harada and Emiko Suzuki won the bronze medal.

Synchronized swimming takes over the Water Cube

Synchronized swimming is perhaps one of the most ridiculed events at the Olympics. I am sure there are plenty of fans of the event, but there are also people who don’t think it belongs in the Olympics.

And it is true, synchronised swimming is a huge test of an athlete’s aerobic capacity, flexibility and co-ordination. The trouble is, it is a significantly more challenging test of the waterproof capacity of her mascara. This is surely the oddest diversion available at the Olympic park, the only time you can find international performers, made up like a bad drag act, earning points for the successful completion of the travelling egg-beater.

China bags 4th straight gold in diving

World champions Wang Feng and Qin Kai won the men’s synchronized 3m springboard title here on Wednesday to continue China’s diving domination with the hosts’ fourth straight gold in Beijing’s diving pool.

While US star Michael Phelps is dominating the Water Cube’s pool, China are sweeping aside all rivals next door in the diving and now have four golds from the competition’s eight events.

This was China’s most comprehensive diving victory of the Games so far.

The Chinese won by a staggering margin of 469.08 points compared to the 421.98 of Russian silver medalists Sautin Dmitry and Yuriy Kunakov while Ukrainian pair Illya Kvasha and Oleksiy Prygorov took bronze with 415.05.

In front of packed crowds of passionate fans, the Chinese have led all four dive competitions this week from start to finish.

Schoolgirls Wang Xin and Chen Roulin won the women’s synchronized 10-meter platform on Tuesday, teenagers Lin Yue and Huo Liang took the men’s synchronized 10-meter platform gold on Monday.

And Guo Jingjing and Wu Minxia cleaned up Sunday’s women’s 3m synchronized springboard event last Sunday, China’s dive queen Guo is expected to claim another gold in Sunday’s women’s 3m individual springboard final.

On Wednesday, Qin and Wang made up for the disappointment of their last place in the same competition four years ago when the hot favorites in Athens came last.

And the gold had an extra sparkle for Wang who finished fourth in the men’s individual 3m springboard in Athens.

Just as their compatriots had done, Wang and Qin led from the first of their six dives and built up a commanding lead.

Having claimed gold in the FINA World Cup in February, the pair started with a hiss and a roar at the Water Cube by scoring three perfect ten marks from the nine judges for their opening back pike.

With four rounds gone it was all over as the Chinese enjoyed a clear 20 point lead which they only extended.

Despite US pair Chris Colwill and Jevon Tarantino stumbling on their fourth round dive which put them sixth, the Americans recovered to claim fourth.

Canada’s Alexandre Despatie, who made Commonwealth Games history as the competition’s youngest gold medal winner at Kuala Lumpur in 1998 aged just 13, finished a disappointing fifth with partner Arturo Miranda.

Gruelling training schedule for synchronized swimming

Reuters interviewed Spain’s synchronized swimmer Gemma Mengual from Spain and found there is a lot more to the sport than smiles and make-up.

“We train between eight and nine hours a day,” Spain’s leading synchronized swimmer Gemma Mengual told Reuters television.

“In the morning we work on the physical elements and do some work in the gym. Then we are into the water, we grab some lunch and then get back in the water until 7 or 8 at night until everything is perfect or near perfect.”

They spend hours perfecting their routines and building endurance, swimming up to 4-kilometers at a time. Gemma Mengual and her partner Andrea Fuentes are hoping to win at least a silver medal in the Olympics, saying the Russians are favorite for the gold medal.
